Xiaomi SU7 received 50,000 firm orders in 27 minutes, undercuts Tesla Model 3 by 4,100 USD

Xiaomi launched its first EV today, the electric sedan SU7. Its starting price is 215,900 yuan (29,900 USD), undercutting the Tesla Model 3 base model, which starts at 245,900 yuan (34,000 USD) in China.

The company announced that 4 minutes after the launch, the car received 10,000 firm orders, 7 minutes after 20,000 orders, and in 27 minutes, the order book reached 50,000 firm orders.

Xiaomi held an opulent conference in Beijing, where it launched three powertrain versions of the SU7. Lei Jun, the company’s CEO, spent about two hours on stage talking about the new car, and the live stream had over 2 million viewers on WeChat. The CEOs and founders of three US-listed Chinese EV makers – Nio, Xpeng, and Li Auto – attended the launch event, and Lei Jun even thanked them for their support during the SU7 development.

Customers can purchase Xiaomi SU7 in Standard, Pro, or Max versions. They differ in battery, powertrain, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Two are rear-wheel drive, while the top trim level is an all-wheel drive performance version with dual motors.

For comparison, the new Tesla Model 3 base model starts at the same level as the SU7 Pro, with a price tag of 245,900 yuan (34,000 USD). It has a CLTC range of 606 km thanks to a 60 kWh LFP battery from CATL and a single RWD motor with 194 kW (260 hp) in China.

Comparison of dimensions (L/W/H):

In China, the Xiaomi SU7 will compete with dozens of all-electric sedans in the 200 – 300k yuan range, such as the BYD Seal, BYD Han, Deepal SL03, Xpeng P7i, or Nio ET5.
